How to care for your skin in your 60s and 70s ?

Your skin undergoes a lot of changes in your 60s and 70s which are unavoidable. However, there is a lot you can do to make your skin look and feel youthful. To improve the way your skin feels and looks you need to follow the right skin care regime.

If you haven’t already taken the necessary precautions dermatologists recommend making the following lifestyle changes to your skin care if you are in your 60s and 70s.
Bathe to lessen dry skin. To prevent itchy, dry skin from becoming a serious problem make some simple changes to your bath time. Here’s what you can do:
Replace soap with a gentle cleanser. Soap can be too harsh on your skin. Use a fragrance-free, gentle and creamy cleanser.
Do not use hot water. Skin dryness will become worse if you use hot water as it strips natural oils from the skin. Use warm water instead.
To wash your skin, use a soft cloth. Your skin will become dry and itchy if you use a bath brush or buff puff. Use a soft towel.
Keep your shower or bath short. There is no need to bath every day. Keep it short when you bathe. It should not take more than 10 minutes.
After bathing pat water gently from your skin. When you apply moisturizer it is good if you have some water on your skin as it helps hydrate your skin.
Throughout the day, especially after bathing, apply a moisturizer formulated for dry skin that is fragrance-free, and creamy. This restores your skin’s protective barrier and helps ease the dryness.
2. When the air feels dry use a humidifier. Humidity from the air gets lost while using air conditioning and heating. Your skin feels itchy and dry when exposed to dry air.
To reduce itchy, dry skin, keep indoor humidity between 45% and 60%. With a hydrometer you can easily measure the humidity in the air.
3. While doing gardening and housework wear gloves. Your skin is exposed to sunlight, harsh chemicals, and other things while working around your house and in your garden. This can cause skin irritation. You skin will not get bruised if you wear gloves.
4. Protect your skin from the sun. You have to protect your skin from the sun at all ages. Those in their 60s and 70s should take double protection because our skin starts thinning as we age and this may lead to blotches of discolored skin, age spots and wrinkles.
Sun protection offers many benefits at this stage in your life. It helps to prevent blotchy skin and new age spots. It can reduce thinning and dry skin. In order to prevent skin cancer you should always wear a sun block.
Dermatologists recommend the following tips to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays:
Apply sunscreen with SPF 50 and above every day. You should reapply it every two hours. Sunscreen should be applied at least 20 minutes before you step outside. Even if it is cloudy you should wear sun block.
Also, use sunglasses and hats while you go out in the sun. To protect your skin from the sun wear clothing that offers sun protection. By holding up to a bright light you can check if the clothing gives you sufficient protection. For instance, if the sun’s rays are not filtering through the clothing you can be sure that it will give enough protection from the sun.
5. Go fragrance free. Skin gets irritated if you use skin care products that contain fragrance, and even colognes and perfumes. To reduce your risk of developing itchy, dry skin, stop using these.
